when eight, germans occupied hungary , deported 500,000 jews concentration camps, including auschwitz. commandant, rudolf höss, said @ trial killed 400,000 hungarian jews in 3 months. avoid being arrested, grove , mother took on false identities , sheltered friends. father, however, arrested , taken eastern labor camp forced labor, , reunited family after war.

during hungarian revolution of 1956, when 20, left home , family , escaped across border austria. penniless , barely able speak english, in 1957 made way united states. later changed name anglicized andrew s. grove. grove summarized first twenty years of life in hungary in memoirs:

by time twenty, had lived through hungarian fascist dictatorship, german military occupation, nazis final solution, siege of budapest soviet red army, period of chaotic democracy in years after war, variety of repressive communist regimes, , popular uprising put down @ gunpoint. . . [where] many young people killed; countless others interned. 2 hundred thousand hungarians escaped west. 1 of them.

soon after arriving in united states, in new york, in 1957, met future wife, eva kastan, fellow refugee. met while held job busboy , waitress. married in june 1958 , remained married until death. had 2 daughters.

even though arrived in united states little money, grove retained passion learning. earned bachelor s degree in chemical engineering city college of new york in 1960, followed ph.d. in chemical engineering university of california, berkeley in 1963.
