there no current international passenger services of zr, of tazara railway. tour companies have run special services on zr network.


democratic republic of congo

the copperbelt reaches katanga province of democratic republic of congo mines @ lubumbashi , further north-west. zr network connects lubumbashi via ndola , sakania. @ 1 time lubumbashi line connected benguela railway through angola lobito bay, line has not operated since 1970s.

as of major export routes ran through apartheid controlled south africa, zambia needed alternate export route copper. in 1976, chinese construction crews completed 1,860-kilometer-long tanzania-zambia railway (tazara) runs kapiri mposhi north of zambian capital lusaka, tanzanian capital , major east african port of dar es salaam. after being operated jointly 2 nationalised railway systems, chinese again took on running of tazara in joint transport agreement january 2007, covered both direct air links beijing capital international airport , copper ore export.

via victoria falls bridge zimbabwe rail network , ports in mozambique (beira, maputo) , south african railways of south africa can reached. condition of 100-year-old bridge restricts traffic.


up mid-1960s, passenger , sleeper services ran ndola bulawayo, zimbabwe (then rhodesia), connecting sleeper service cape town , union castle shipping line southampton, uk. main travel route between south-central africa , europe before jet age. journey ndola cape town took 5 days.


ndola-bulawayo passenger services ended when zambia suspended services across victoria falls bridge in response rhodesia s udi crisis. freight services resumed line re-opening in 1980, successful passenger services have not resumed.


malawi

a rail link between malawi , zambia, allowing access port of nacala, first planned in 1982. on malawi side of border, line mchinji finished in 1984, connection chipata in zambia opened in 2010. line remains idle because there few facilities @ chipata.
