the third lighthouse marked major step forward in design of such structures.


recommended royal society, civil engineer john smeaton modelled shape on oak tree, built of granite blocks. pioneered hydraulic lime , concrete cured under water, , developed technique of securing granite blocks using dovetail joints , marble dowels. construction started in 1756 @ millbay , light first lit on 16 october 1759.


smeaton s lighthouse 59 feet (18 m) high , had diameter @ base of 26 feet (8 m) , @ top of 17 feet (5 m).


in 1841 major renovations made, under direction of engineer henry norris of messrs. walker & burges, including complete repointing, replacement water tanks , filling of large cavity in rock close foundations. remained in use until 1877 when erosion rocks under lighthouse caused shake side side whenever large waves hit. smeaton s lighthouse rebuilt on plymouth hoe, in plymouth, memorial. william tregarthen douglass supervised dismantling , removal of smeaton s tower. re-erected tower on hoe tourist attraction.


the foundations , stub of tower remain, close new , more solid foundations of current lighthouse – foundations proved strong dismantled victorians left them stood.


an 1850 replica of smeaton s lighthouse, hoad monument, stands above town of ulverston, cumbria memorial naval administrator sir john barrow.
