managerial career

freedman s coaching career began when appointed reserve team manager of crystal palace in november 2005. in role alongside playing duties club s first team. role ended when joined leeds united on loan following march. following move southend united, began coaching alongside playing shrimpers first team.


in march 2010, freedman returned crystal palace again, time assistant manager paul hart, john pemberton first team coach, helping secure survival eagles. when george burley appointed manager, kept freedman assistant manager. following sacking of burley on new year s day 2011, freedman given role manager, on caretaker basis, many expected few weeks until new manager appointed, freedman made permanent manager of crystal palace signing 2 , half-year deal on 11 january 2011. moved bring in lennie lawrence assistant manager , former palace team-mate tony popovic first team coach.


he successful in guiding crystal palace out of relegation zone, club achieving safety game spare. palace began 2011–12 season under new manager, occupying playoff places @ end of october , enjoying run in football league cup, knocked out manchester united 2–1 @ old trafford goals darren ambrose , glenn murray. crystal palace ended season finishing in 17th place. made strong start 2012–13 season.


bolton wanderers

on 23 october 2012 crystal palace released statement announcing first team manager dougie freedman has joined bolton wanderers. @ time bolton, in 16th place in championship, 12 places below crystal palace in 4th. bolton confirmed appointment on 25 october. first match in charge of bolton finished in 2–1 win on cardiff city. first signing bolton manager of norwich city midfielder jacob butterfield on month-long loan.


throughout november, freedman s first full month in charge, new team remained undefeated, first time had achieved 2 years. went on lead bolton wanderers 5 wins in row first time since 2006 in late push promotion, taking club 20th 7th position in championship. bolton narrowly missed out on qualifying play-offs on final day of season, whereas crystal palace made play-offs , ended winning play offs , being promoted. after guiding bolton late push play-offs, freedman won football league championship manager of month award april 2013. 2013–14 season less successful bolton inconsistent , finished in 14th, first win not coming until october.


the 2014–15 season started similarly, bolton failed win of first 6 games , 1 of first ten. freedman left club on 3 october 2014 mutual consent.


nottingham forest

on 1 february 2015, freedman appointed manager of nottingham forest, following sacking of stuart pearce. after positive start tenure, on 16 april 2015 confirmed freedman had signed new contract keep him @ city ground further 2 years. forest finished 14th 2014–15 season. following 3 wins in 22 games, freedman s position @ forest came under threat, former forest player nigel clough being linked replacing freedman manager. however, following wins against reading, fulham , mk dons, plus away draws against wolves , blackburn in november , december 2015, freedman s position stabilised, more when clough appointed manager of burton albion in december. in spite of having number of key players injured , forest being severely restricted because of transfer embargo, freedman went on lead forest 13-game unbeaten run. ended on 30 january 2016 1–0 defeat watford in fourth round of fa cup. however, shortly after, forest lost form, managing 1 win in 6 games. following 3-0 defeat sheffield wednesday @ city ground on march 12, 2016, in 8 forest players unable play because of injury, freedman sacked following day.

on 21 august 2017, freedman returned crystal palace sporting director.
