wptz shut down analog signal, on vhf channel 5, on february 17, 2009, original date in full-power television stations in united states transition analog digital broadcasts under federal mandate (which later pushed june 12, 2009). station s digital signal remained on pre-transition uhf channel 14. through use of psip, digital television receivers display station s virtual channel former vhf analog channel 5. 1 of first stations owned hearst cease analog broadcasting (kitv in honolulu, hawaii other).

in september 2006, wptz established daily web video forecast part of major revamping of website. feature, called weather plus update , introduced logo showing wptz/wnne offering nbc weather plus 5&31 weather plus . starting in october, studios in plattsburgh underwent extensive renovations. during time, broadcasts temporary set while construction took place. while studios whole being upgraded, weather department underwent change. in advance of launch of nbc weather plus, weather center expanded make room new combined wptz/wnne weather graphics , logos. remodeling completed late-november.

wptz launched weather plus on new second digital subchannel on november 15 after debuting new digital signal mount mansfield day earlier. service never offered on wnne s digital signal though had been airing since july 20, 2005. on digital cable, wptz-dt2 carried on comcast digital channel 169 (serving upper valley), telecom digital channel 305, , time warner cable digital channel 854. never offered on charter systems in new york state.

in december 2008, nbc shut down national weather plus service after parent company, nbcuniversal, purchased weather channel. wptz continued air locally-derived version of weather plus until august 31, 2009 when replaced tv. marked network s first foray plattsburgh , burlington area along st. lawrence county in new york , eastern portions of adjacent watertown market wptz has long served default nbc affiliate on cable. wptz-dt2 remained on 3 digital cable systems (with change on comcast systems channel 302) while being added charter digital channel 296. still not carried on subchannel of wnne. on january 2, 2013, tv replaced on 5.2 sister network, metv (memorable entertainment television). both networks owned @ time weigel broadcasting (tribune broadcasting has since taken on tv).

on march 4, 2013, wptz s second digital subchannel assumed cw affiliation plattsburgh/burlington market wfff-dt2. continued air metv programming outside cw network slots until september 2014, when metv separated own subchannel. while airs cw s schedule in-pattern, bill cunningham show, airs weekdays @ 3 p.m. on many cw affiliates, delayed 12:30 a.m until launch of separate metv subchannel. since main wptz channel serves 1 of default nbc affiliates massena, new york (along wstm-tv in syracuse), area has access 2 cw affiliates when watertown s wwti-dt2 included. despite adding cw, there have been no plans made public wptz s semi-satellite wnne adding network in order increase broadcasting radius. currently, access in upper valley of vermont , new hampshire solely through digital tier of comcast or charter systems.

on september 15, 2014, wptz separated cw , metv own subchannels, 5.2 , 5.3 respectively, did not add them wnne s signal. wptz-dt2 airs syndicated programming outside of cw network hours via cw plus. in april 2016, over-the-air digital signal of wptz-dt2 upgraded 720p high definition; offering high definition feed cw first time in burlington/plattsburgh area (and entire champlain valley , beyond) , second high definition feed cw in massena (the other being wwti-dt2 of watertown, has been broadcasting digital over-the-air signal in 720p high definition since august 17, 2012). in may 2016, comcast began carrying wptz-dt2 s high definition feed on digital channel 706 burlington (as upper connecticut river valley) viewers , charter began carrying wptz-dt2 s high definition feed on digital channel 711 plattsburgh viewers.
