m88 1 of fifteen messier objects belong nearby virgo cluster of galaxies. galaxy number 1401 in virgo cluster catalogue (vcc) of 2096 galaxies candidate members of cluster. m88 may on highly elliptical orbit carrying toward cluster center, occupied giant elliptical galaxy m87. 0.3–0.48 million parsecs center , come closest core in 200–300 million years. motion of m88 through intergalactic medium of virgo cluster creating ram pressure stripping away outer region of neutral hydrogen. stripping has been detected along western, leading edge of galaxy.

this galaxy inclined line of sight 64°. classified sbc spiral, lies between sb , sc categories of medium-wound , loosely wound spiral arms, respectively. arm structure of spirals regular , can followed down galactic core. maximum rotation velocity of gas 241.6 ± 4.5 km/s.


m88 classified type 2 seyfert galaxy, means produces narrow spectral line emission highly ionized gas in galactic nuclei. in core region there central condensation 230 parsec diameter, has 2 concentration peaks. condensation being fed inflow spiral arms. supermassive black hole @ core of galaxy has 10 solar masses, or 80 million times mass of sun.


in 1999, supernova 1999cl discovered in galaxy.
