unlike later nba broadcast partners, cbs used lyrics in theme music 1973–76. used of 1978–79 season. lyrics, sung in upbeat fashion ensemble of singers, paired visuals using rotoscoped basketball players in silhouette, against black background , outlined in different colors. lyrics full version (there shorter versions of theme , lyrics presented below) below:



starting in 1977, cbs used alternate opening showing montage of still pictures of current nba star athletes music (similar music used network cbs nfl coverage @ time) accompanying it. during 1977–78 season cbs used highlights , various shots of arena game take place music of van mccoy s 2 points . in 1980, cbs used rotoscoped animation in silhouette of 1 player shooting jumpshot , ball in mid air rolling nba teams spun in air, music of francis monkman s g-force behind it. during 1978–79 season, music highlights chase , theme giorgio moroder movie midnight express. opening guitar , horn riff of chicago hit alive again used highlights prior opening animation during 1979–80 , 1980–81 seasons.


by 1983 nba finals, opening sequence set in primitive computer-generated montage of basketball action inside virtual arena looked similar boston garden. opening sequence (which intertwined montage of live basketball action complete narration) created bill feigenbaum, created similar open nfl today used around same time. opening melody (mostly consisting of uptempo series of 4 notes , 3 bars each) 1983–1988 considered familiar theme music nba on cbs used.


for 1989 nba finals, cbs revamped opening montage. computer-generated imagery (once again set in , around virtual arena) made more realistic (live-action footage incorporated in backdrops). also, familiar theme music rearranged sound more intricate , have more emotional impact, along lines of network s later world series coverage. between 1989 nba finals , 1990 nba finals intros, there slight theme tune revision. 1989 finals intro had lot more of guitar riff it. meanwhile, 1990 finals intro carried little more usage of trumpet sound.


cbs create special intros during nba finals composed of music either terms of endearment or st. elmo s fire playing in background.


on june 14, 1990, cbs televised final nba broadcast date. game 5 of nba finals between detroit pistons , portland trail blazers. way of saying farewell , thank viewers after 17 years, cbs used marvin gaye s rendition of star-spangled banner 1983 nba all-star game soundtrack closing montage (featuring greatest moments in history of nba on cbs).
